"I am not a teenager anymore, so why do I still get acne?"

We get this question a lot, so please don't feel like you're alone! Many of our clients with a wide range of ages complain about battling acne. We all will get that annoying occasional zit, but others struggle with a constant appearance of acne.

According to the Mayo Clinic there are a few typical causes of acne:

  • Medications can be a trigger for acne. Especially with medications that contain corticosteriods, androgens, and lithium.
  • Diet- Foods that are carbohydrate-rich such as bread, bagels, and potato chips can be culprits of acne and unfortunately the rumor is true, that chocolate can aggravate existing acne.
  • Stress

But what if you don't fall into one of those categories? Why do we still get acne?

There are two types of acne that effect people of all ages. As we age our estrogen levels drop and testosterone levels increase. This hormonal imbalance results in an increase in oil gland production in the skin, which can clog pores and cause acne. Its important to be able to understand what the different types of acne look like and how they will differ in treatment.

Cystic Acne

Skin types that are common with cystic acne is acne prone skin. This can happen at any age, but is most common during the teenage years during hormonal changes when an overproduction of sebum occurs.

The appearance of cystic acne is typically large, red, and painful found deep in the skin. Cysts are produced and scars may have already formed. Affected areas are the face, chest, back, upper arms and shoulders.
